For this test the baby’s neck crease is measured ( between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy) and blood is drawn from the mother and specific hormone levels are determined ( between 9 and 11 weeks of pregnancy).From the combination of these levels and the mother’s age the probability of getting a baby with Down sydrome is calculated.

This probablity calculated test can be done regardless of your age but the expenses of the test will only be paid for by your insurance company if you are 36 years of age or older, or when you run a higher hereditary risk. The costs of this test are about 150 euros.

If you are 36 years of age or older in the 18th week of the pregnancy, you are taken into consideration for prenatal diagnostics. The reason for this is that the chance of getting a child with a chromosal aberration increases when the mother’s age is higher.
